London Location Information - Canary Wharf/Docklands
The London Docklands are situated to the east of the city across the Thames from Greenwich. This area will play host to the Olympics in 2012. The Docklands area is well served by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and is also linked by the Jubilee Line to the centre of London. 3 miles from the Docklands, you can find London City Airport which provides access to key European destinations such as Holland, Germany and Belgium.
ExCel conference and exhibition centre hosts all the major exhibitions in London throughout the year from the Boat Show in January to the World Travel Market in November.
The Docklands offer various possibilities for sightseeing and the Docklands Light Railway has selected trains with commentary to explain about the modern and partly futuristic architecture and the historic docks. You can also visit the forgotten relic of ancient London at the Roman London Wall. As the Docklands is near the River Thames, the majority of river cruises either start or end here and this is one of the most pleasant ways of travelling down through London and seeing the city from a different perspective. You will be able to see Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Tower Pier, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, the National Maritime Museum, the Observatory and much more on a days cruise. Many boats also operate in the evening, offering sumptuous meals and a cool glass of wine whilst enjoying the splendour of London by night.
London's relatively new Canary Wharf area is located in the Tower Hamlets district of the city and is a large business development centred in the London Docklands. Canary Wharf tenants include major banks such as HSBC, Citigroup and Barclays. You will also find offices of many of the newspapers firms such as the Telegraph, the Independent, Reuters and the Daily Mail located here. Canary Wharf is connected to London by the Canary Wharf Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and also via the recent extension of the Jubilee line.
