The Bankside Winter festival brings the spirit of the Frost Fair and Christmas to London with ten days of entertainment and festive fare. The Frost Fair in London has been part of the winter celebrations for many hundreds of years, and this modern interpretation reflects the markets that were held on the Thames in the depths of winter when the river froze over. Around 30 to 40 arts and crafts stalls, are selling last minute stocking fillers, jewellery, fine ceramics, wooden Christmas gifts, leather and fossil goods and other handcrafted items. To ward off the chill from the River Thames there will also be several outlets selling delicious festive food and mulled wine to keep you warm, and a main bar selling wine and ale.

The main venue for The BBC Proms is the Royal Albert Hall but other locations are also used. The Proms is an annual eight-week season of daily orchestral classical music concerts during the summer months.

These twice-a-year fairs have been running since 1950 and are prestige events in the antique world’s calendar. The organisers have faced the fact that they cannot compete with larger venues in the display of ‘brown furniture’ or big items, and therefore this will be a festival of the finest small antiques. Expect some exquisite pieces on display at the launch of this new, delicate format. The next Chelsea Antiques Fair is from 25th to 28th March 2009.

Chelsea Flower Show, 19-23 May 2009. Every year during May the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea Royal, London SW3 come alive with the sights and smells of the finest collections of flowers in the world. This is an international event for all motor vehicle enthusiasts in the historical north London landmark in Alexandra Palace. The show is on in the beginning of November every year. With hundreds of vintage, Edwardian, veteran, classic, prestige and rare vehicles on show, this is a show that shouldn’t be missed. The show includes practical demonstrations, trade opportunities and cars for sale.

Just to put you in your place next time you're a bit tipsy and fancy a spin round the floor, the International Ballroom Dancing Championships features the best dance talent in the country in competition at the Royal Albert Hall. Kids Week in London takes place every year in late summer. Children go for free to all participating shows during Kids Week when accompanied by an adult paying full price. London's biggest open air theatre in the summer. Famous for Sheakspeare performance - Midsummer Night's Dream, musicals and children's play. On sunday evenings they host a series of comedy and concerts.

The biggest of London’s mass skating events takes place every Sunday between 2 pm and 4 pm on the east side of the Serpentine in Hyde Park. This is a big skating event open to anyone who can stop at a downhill! It is a great way to see the city and get some exercise. Rollerstroll normally follows a circular route but every month there's a 'destination skate' which will take you to an unexpected and remote corner of the city.

The annual London International Horse Show at Olympia is one of the highlights of the equestrian year and attracts all the top names in the sport. The show includes show jumping, dressage, dog agility, the Shetland pony Grand National and a Grande finale. There are also over 150 stands for visitors to enjoy in the Olympia Shopping Village.

The London Wine Show is billed as "London's premier wine experience". Visitors have the opportunity to taste, try, and buy wines from all around the world in a fun and interactive environment. The Lord Mayor's Show is an annual London event, takin place every second Saturday in November. More than 6,000 people of all ages take part in the three mile long procession.

The New Year’s Day Parade in London is the greatest annual street parade in Europe. This is a free spectacular for the whole family to welcome the New Year. Since its start on 1st January 1987, the parade has grown to a very big event enjoyed by millions of people world wide every year. The parade goes from Parliament Square to Piccadilly and passes some of London’s greatest historical sights such as Big Ben, 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and The Ritz Hotel.

The Times London Film Festival is presented annually by the British Film Institute. It is the largest public film event in Europe, screening 280 films from 60 countries. The Great River Race has firmly established itself after 18 years in the sporting calendar to such an extent that experienced crews now describe it as a classic event - the one they all want to win. This year's race is on 13th Septemer. Starting off at Richmond, the race will go down towards the east of the River Thames towards Greenwich where it will finish. The winners will receive the coveted Challenge Trophy of The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of The River Thames and become the 2008 UK Traditional Boat Champions. In addition they will be presented with the exclusive one-off Trafalgar Great River Race Trophy.

The 203rd anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson will be commemorated in October 2008 by the Sea Cadet Corps.

Landmark Christmas event in London. This year the 62nd Christmas tree comes to London from the city of Olslo as a token of friendship and gratitude for Britain’s assistance during World War II. The tree will be decorated in traditional Norwegian style. The lighting of the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree includes a programme of festive events, some of which are ongoing until Christmas Day, including carol singing and more. After the lighting ceremony, the tree lights will be turned on from noon until midnight each day throughout the Christmas season. The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree will be lit on Thursday 4th December 2008 at 6pm, the tree will remain at Trafalgar Square until 2nd January 2009. The Trooping of the Colour’s parade is held on the occasion of the Queen’s official birthday and takes place in June each year. The parade is carried out by the Queen’s personal troops, over 1400 officers and men are on parade together with two hundred horses. The custom of the Trooping of the Colour dates back to the 17th century and the time of Charles II. The parade goes from Buckingham Palace along The Mall, to the Horseguards Parade and then back again.

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, hosted in London, is the most famous grass court tennis tournament, taking place every year during a fortnight in June/July. Wimbledon is one of the Grand Slam tournaments, where the world's top ranked male and female tennis pros participate. Over 500.000 are attracted every year. 22nd June - 5th July 2009
