One of the most famous streets in Britain, Downing Street has been home to both the Prime Minister of Great Britain at no. 10 and the Chancellor of the Exchequer at no. 11 since decreed so by Parliament in 1732. Downing Street is situated just off Whitehall and within 5 minutes walk from the House of Commons at Parliament. Whitehall houses many offices of the government. Downing Street has been closed to the public since 1990 due to fear of IRA terrorist attacks, so you can but get as far as the end of the road and gaze through the iron gates closely watched by a London Bobby!
