Located in the south east of London, Greenwich is literally where east meets west Greenwich is home to the time zones of the World specified by the phrase Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and known as the Greenwich Meridien. No matter where you are in the World, all time is measured from here. For those adventurous enough, you can stand with one foot in the north and south or east and west at one time. Aside from the GMT, Greenwich is also the birth place of Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. Prior to the building of Buckingham Palace, the Kings and Queens of England resided in Greenwich and Greenwich is home to the Royal Navy College. Greenwich lies on the banks of the Thames with many different pubs all with nautical themes such as 'The Yacht', 'The Trafalgar' and 'The Cutty Sark'. Across the river, you can see the Docklands peninsular where the Millennium Dome can be found. This was built to celebrate the new Millennium in 2000 and is the largest dome ever to be built in the World. Each April, the beautiful park in Greenwich is the starting point for the London Marathon, the 26.2 mile run which takes over 20,000 runners of all levels of ability through London. The London Marathon always creates a festival atmosphere with many street bands and entertainers and is a good day out for runners, spectators and families. Grenwich Park is also home to the National Maritime Museum, which is filled with nautical memorabilia through the ages as well as an extensive exhibition on the lives of both Horation Nelson and Napoleon Bonaparte.
