London Location Information - Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is arguably the most recognised tourist attraction in the whole of Great Britain. Ostensibly a traffic intersection on the edge of London's theatreland, Piccadilly Circus is renowned for it's neon lighting and the Coca Cola emblem which lights up the Square at night time. Piccadilly links it from the south and to the west there is first Regent Street and then Shaftesbury Avenue, which leads to all the famous West End theatres. Further on and heading south is the Haymarket, formwally a makret street selling hay and other commodities and now home to the Theatre Haymarket where the famous Lloyd Webber musical 'Phantom of the Opera' has run for many years. In the centre of Piccadilly Circus is a pedestrianised area where the Shaftesbury Memorial and the Eros fountain both stand. At the top of the fountain is the statue of the Angel of Christian Charity also known as Eros, named after the Greek God of Love. In recent years the statue has become a London Icon, the statue originally pointed its bow to the north, up Shaftsbury Avenue. However, during the Second World War the statue was removed for safe keeping and when it was returned its bow was fixed pointing more to the south, towards Lower Regent Street. There are a number of major shops in the Piccadilly Circus area including Tower Records, Virgin Mega stores, Gap and Nokia.

At the nearby Royal Academy, there is an annual exhibition each summer about print making. The Print Room at the academy has become increasingly popular and reveals a wide range of printing techniques but concentrating on the traditional methods of printing.

Since the first of January 1987, London hosts the greatest street parade in Europe, the New Years Day Parade and this passes by Piccadilly Circus. This is a free event for the whole family and millions come to watch every year.

Each year during January, the Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year in Chinatown which is just to the back of Piccadilly Circus. There are a lot of street stalls, hundreds of lanterns are hung out and you can enjoy many traditional Chinese events including fireworks and cultural performances.
