Cheap London Hotels Can Make You Feel at Home

London has a well deserved reputation for its deluxe hotels and international brands which adorn the swanky streets of Knightsbridge, Park Lane and Mayfair however perhaps less well known are the endless number of budget hotels which can be found all through the capital and provide the visitor with a cheap and viable alternative to paying the high prices some of the more high end hotels charge.
Whether it be Bayswater, Earls Court or Victoria, Bloomsbury, the City or Kensington, there is always a cheap, budget hotel to be found offering great value for money and giving you all the home comforts you need for your stay. All hotel rooms offer TVs generally with satellite programmes so if you’re tired from sightseeing all day and fancy a take away pizza and a quiet night in, in front of the telly then this is all possible, just like being at home!
You’ll always have private facilities in your rooms and most hotels have a hotel bar so again, if you don’t feel like going out, you can always have a couple of drinks at the bar and maybe get to know some fellow travellers. These smaller budget hotels are generally owner managed so chances are you’ll get to know the owner of the hotel too during your stay whether at the bar or over breakfast and you can pick up some good tips about where to go and what to see. Hotel owners like to see their hotels busy and are therefore keen to interact with their guests, to give them a good experience so hopefully they may return and stay once again in the same hotel in London. Unlike many of the more luxurious hotels, breakfast is generally included in your room rate in the budget hotels and normally consists of bread, rolls, butter and jams as well as coffee, tea and fruit juice. For a small supplement, generally around £5.00 - £6.00 per day, you can order a cooked, English breakfast either plated or from the buffet and additionally to the standard continental breakfast, you can enjoy bacon, eggs, sausage, beans and tomatoes – just like a great breakfast at home without all the fuss of having to make it and setting you up nicely for your busy day exploring the sights of London! Even cheaper are hotels outside the centre of the city, in such boroughs as Hammersmith, Shoreditch, Elephant and Castle and Tottenham.
Whilst these hotels are not directly in the centre, being mainly in zones two and three, there is always a tube station in easy walking distance from your hotel and you can get into the centre of the city in no time at all. Staying in the less tourist areas of London will also give you the opportunity to experience local life and see what the real Londoners do of an evening! Local pubs and restaurants in the outer areas of London offer amazing value for money and a rich choice of cuisine with some truly amazing Indian flavours for example!
Staying in a budget hotel outside the centre will also give you the opportunity to visit one of the many local markets which take place regularly throughout the capital and you can pick up a couple of authentic souvenirs to take home with you!
If you're planning a trip to London and you're looking for inspiration visit www.london-discount-hotel.com for some great deals on over 200 centrally located hotels from budget to five star deluxe. All prices include taxes and most offers also throw in free breakfast so there are no annoying extras you normally find at the end of the booking process on a lot of websites. There are some serious good discounted prices on theatre tickets, attractions and tours to be had. The site’s also got some good general information about London too, which is always useful when planning your trip. Alternately you can call London Discount Hotel 7 days a week on 020 77307182

Madame Tussauds London: George Clooney Figure launch

London, 13th February 2013. Madame Tussauds London caused a pre-Valentine’s Day stir this morning, when they took A-list actor, George Clooney, onto the streets of London to give fans a sneak preview of his brand new wax figure. Seated on a leather sofa, suited and booted in superstar style, the much admired silver fox got hearts racing and showed just why he topped a recent poll* declaring him the most desirable Valentine’s Day date.
“We are constantly seeking our guests’ views and opinions and we recently asked them which celebrity they would most like to have a Valentine’s date with,” explains Madame Tussauds PR Manager, Nicole Fenner.  “There was a very clear winner with Mr Clooney scoring far more votes than anyone else, so we decided to make some of his fans dreams come true with a pre-Valentine’s Day date with our gorgeous George. This is a brand new wax figure that has yet to make its debut in the attraction, so the people here on Carnaby Street are the very first to get up close to it - and judging by the response it looks like he’s got the seal of approval.”
Clooney polled double the votes of desirable date number two, Prince Harry, with Twilight actor Robert Pattinson in third, Clooney’s best friend, Brad Pitt, in fourth and the ultimate British gentleman, Colin Firth, in fifth. The top five most dateable females were Angelina Jolie, Cheryl Cole, Kate Winslet, Beyonce and the timeless Helen Mirren.
One of the first to take to Clooney’s sofa was 24 year old Claudia Parker from London. Seizing the opportunity to sit alongside the eternal bachelor she said, “This has been a great pre-Valentine’s Day treat to sit down with one of Hollywood’s heartthrobs – he looks so lifelike I feel like I’m cuddling up to the real George Clooney.”
Clooney’s figure will be receiving visitors at the Baker Street attraction from tomorrow – 14th February 2013.

Madame Tussauds London: Who's Coming Next

March 11, 2013. Madame Tussauds today confirmed all five members of the phenomenally successful band, One Direction, are to be created as wax figures for a touring attraction that will kick off in three Madame Tussauds venues – London (April 18-July 11), New York (July 19-October 11) and Sydney (October 24- January 28). Further dates and locations will follow. "We have been overwhelmed by requests for us to feature One Direction," commented Global Head of Marketing, Liz Wells. "The boys have been top of the most wanted personalities list in London, New York and Sydney for the last 12 months, so we are delighted we can now satisfy public demand by bringing their figures to each of these cities in a special ‘world tour’, which will eventually take in more locations. Louis, Liam, Harry, Zayn and Niall have been involved throughout the sculpting process and our studios team have had great fun working with them at two sittings, taking hundreds of precise measurements and discussing the style their figures will be portrayed in. We'll be recording every step of the process and fans can check out our special microsite - www.madametussauds.com/1D - to see how the figures are progressing, watch exclusive interviews and see behind the scenes photographs." The boys themselves are delighted to be getting waxed by Madame Tussauds. Harry commented, "We’re just kind of a bit overwhelmed. We've been to Madame Tussauds and seen the kind of people who are in there. It's crazy to think that we will be up there with them". Niall was similarly surprised and excited, saying, "We were super excited to find out that they were making us and that people felt we were worthy of a figure.” Both Louis and Zayn commented on how honoured they felt. "I think it's going to be quite weird to see yourself as a wax figure. But it’s an amazing honour to be there. If you look at some of the names that are in there, we are very proud," said Louis. While Zayn commented, "This is insane. All the biggest stars around the world get these wax figures made of them and why are we, five normal lads, getting these made? It's an amazing honour, really cool and we can't wait to see them." Liam too was astounded when he heard and reflected on the quality of the figures he has seen at Madame Tussauds, saying, "We actually first heard when we were over at Madame Tussauds looking at the figures so we were even more like WOW we're going to get one of these made. And they are so amazing as well. The quality of the work that goes on over there is mad." The sculptors creating the figures are working in close collaboration with the band and are aware thousands of fans will be clamouring for a look at their heroes’ doubles as soon as they make their debut at each venue. Principle sculptor, Stephen Mansfield, commented, "We are acutely aware that millions of fans around the world will have a lot to say about these figures and we are determined not to let them down. We are hard at work to not only recreate totally accurate physical likenesses, but we want to inject something of the boys’ energy and personalities into their figures too. The boys have been a delight to work with, really co-operative and a huge amount of fun." From start to finish the creation process will take four months and each figure will cost Madame Tussauds £150,000 to make. The boys will be grouped together casually seated on a school style double bench and fans will be able to sit right beside them. The boys will be dressed in their signature smart-casual stage style, modern tailoring with a fun, youthful twist. The tour kicks off at Madame Tussauds London on April 18, where the figures will be featured in a special themed One Direction area, and will remain in the attraction until July 11. US fans can see the figures at Madame Tussauds New York from July 19 where they will remain until October 11. And then it's on to Australia where the figures will reach Sydney on October 24 for a three month stay ending on January 28, 2014. Extra tour dates will be announced in the future.

Original Hogwarts Locomotive to Arrive at Warner Bros. Studio Tour

This March, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter will unveil a 20,000 ft 2 expansion, including the original Hogwarts Express steam engine and a recreation of Platform 9 ¾. The new, permanent section will offer a glimpse into how some of the films’ most iconic scenes were created as well as give visitors the chance to climb aboard the train’s carriage and to pose with a luggage trolley as it disappears through the platform wall. Throughout the Harry Potter film series, British steam train no. 5972, ‘Olton Hall’, was used as the Hogwarts Express. Scenes featuring the working engine – including the very last scene to be shot, in which a grown-up Harry, Ron and Hermione wave their own children off as they head to school – were filmed on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and on a track running the full length of the Studios’ 100-acre backlot. The 78-year-old engine will return to the series’ production home this spring and will be displayed on a realistic set of tracks, with steam billowing as visitors step onto the platform. Officially opening on Thursday 19th March, the new, must-see section has been redesigned and will be built by many of the crew members who worked on the most successful film series of all time. Every inch of the platform’s glass roof, yellow brick walls and luggage racks, designed by Oscar® and BAFTA winning Production Designer Stuart Craig, will be painstakingly reassembled by a team led by Construction Manager Paul Hayes and dressed by Set Decorator Rosie Goodwin. Oscar® and BAFTA winning Special Effects Supervisor John Richardson will rig the locomotive with special effects steam. Visitors will be able to walk along the train’s adjoining carriage and sit in the interior carriage set that was used during filming (complete with ‘windows’ that demonstrate the process used to create iconic train scenes from the films such as the escape of Harry’s first Chocolate Frog and the Dementor attack). A selection of prop luggage will be on show and visitors can find out which character owned which items by turning an interactive dial (characters include Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Luna Lovegood and more). A train-themed souvenir shop will also be open on the platform, stocking a wide range of goodies inspired by the Harry Potter films and, specifically, the Hogwarts Express. Sarah Roots, Vice President of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, commented: “We can’t wait to open our first expansion, Platform 9 ¾, just before the Studio Tour’s third anniversary in March. The Hogwarts Express had a starring role in the films so we’re excited that it will be taking centre stage in the new area. It’s the piece that visitors have most requested to see and we’re expecting a fantastic response.” Stuart Craig, Production Designer on all eight Harry Potter films, added: “The Hogwarts Express was the setting for many iconic scenes, from Harry, Hermione and Ron’s first meeting in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to the moment the trio’s children embark on their first journey to school 26 years later. The wizarding world doesn’t have a need for modern technology so we knew a traditional steam engine would make the perfect school train. Before we began filming in 2000, we scoured the country and found ‘Olton Hall’ at a preservation centre in Lancashire; realising pretty quickly that it was exactly what we had been looking for.” The new Platform 9 ¾ section, featuring the original Hogwarts Express, will open on Thursday 19th March and entrance will be included in the standard ticket price.

The Shard

The Shard, 25th January 2013
The skyline in London is going through somewhat of a metamorphosis with new buildings appearing on a regular basis.
The most spectacular new addition and most spectacular new construction to date is The Shard, which can be seen from almost anywhere in central London. At 310 meters high, this fascinating new building is the tallest in the whole of the European Union. Resembling a huge piece of glass – and hence the unusual name – the building rises 95 floors high to a sharp pinnacle.
Within the Shard, there will be many floors of brand new office space and with its great location in the middle of the City, London’s financial district, there will be no shortage of companies waiting to relocate into this high prestige building.
The Shard will also be home to a brand new 5-star hotel from the luxury Far East Shangri-La hotel group and top of the range apartments with a top price tag to go with them!   Between the 67th and 72 floors of the Shard, a brand new London attraction has been created, The View from the Shard with viewing platforms purposefully constructed outside (but with high level glass front) to give the visitor the true feeling of being on the outside of a very, very high up building! Spectacular views have been promised from the Shard right across London and as far as Windsor on a clear day.
On certain days, the viewing platform will actually be above the cloud level in London, making for an altogether very different feeling!
The Shard is located at London Bridge Station and the whole area itself is being completely renovated. From the viewing platform, the trains below resemble part of a miniature railway and erstwhile high buildings such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Gherkin and the modern financial premises of London City seem to be dwarfed by this truly magnificent new structure.
Planning to visit the Shard is likewise to be made in a truly modern manner – tickets should be booked online and upon arrival (after passing through airport style security) there are machines to enter the booking reference number and away you go, changing lift once and you’re whisked up to the sixty seventh floor in a matter of seconds.
There’s no time limit once you’re up too, which gives you plenty of time to pick out all the famous buildings on offer in London and for those Londoners, you might even spot your house!
You can turn up and pay £29.00 though at the start the attraction is pretty much sold out so it’s best to book online and pay a discounted rate on this price. Maybe not cheap but the Shard is a once in a lifetime experience to capture a fantastic view across London and the surrounding areas so it comes highly recommended.
The Shard is open in the evening too so a great place to finish off a romantic evening or to visit after dinner with the family or a group of friends.
